Sketch for new peacock painting, it’s tricky to try and think about mood and themes for such a simple subject…
Think I’m going to try and concentrate on the patterns, textures and shapes rather than any grand concept, although I would like it to have a calm, flowing and harmonious feel to it. Not totally sure on the background and colours yet, that will be tomorrow’s experimenting job!

So am fully back home now all ready to crack on with some brand new projects!
Started this peacock painting project about a year ago and got shamefully behind on it during my 3rd uni year so I think now is the time to take it up again: https://sarahkirk.wordpress.com/2010/07/25/peacock/
Am also very excited about the new House of Illustration/Folio Society book competition, last year’s was ‘The Outsider’ by Albert Camus and I never managed to finish it completely. This year we have Angela Carter’s ‘The Bloody Chamber’ which luckily I not only own but also have already done a project on it! How useful!
My battered old copy:

So I have gone and finished a new project already! Without even posting one development post..! I will eventually get back to using this blog properly but for now I have very limited internet access so will have to carry on with the post-every-few-of-weeks method.
Anyway this was a recent commission to develop a logo and related imagery for this lovely company:
I have completed some different designs based on one main magpie image, including variations on a frame/mirror idea. As the company spots new play scripts to research and develop, the frame acts as the boundary for the magpie, mirroring him back at us like plays mirror real life. The space created by the frame could also be portrayed as a stage.

First summer project post! My first idea for a ‘current affairs’ topic was the oil spill which was arguably the biggest news story of the summer. The problem I have with it is that there are so many different angles to look at. As well as the obvious environmental consequences, I also have the economics involved, the effect on tourist and leisure industries, the massive loss of fuel for many countries, and the theatrical villainy of the uber rich managers and CEOs of BP as portrayed in the media. To be honest I think these are way too many things to think about for one project so I’m considering deciding on a completely new one; one which has a narrower scope and is perhaps a bit closer to home.
However these are a few sketchy images of the beginning of my research:

Well with moving back home and everything I have been really slack with the illustration stuff recently. Just started doing a little project for my mum, thought I’d do it on a peacock as I’ve never really drawn one before and they’re so interestingly patterned…!
Also I never uploaded the image of my finished red cardinal painting so here it is……..

Trying to do some different stuff by being a bit more free and experimental in my sketchbook doodling, so here are some pages that I’m hoping will help me out with ideas and soon please.
