New project! Quite a challenging project.. I’m planning to design, illustrate and make 3 dresses inspired by novels, starting with Pride and Prejudice. Got very excited at doing something which involved lots of reading, and was really new and different, and then realised how much work it would be as we have to have it finished by Christmas. And as Jane Austen’s books are pretty much just social situations, I can’t really get away with not drawing people which is definately not my strong point. I’m going to have to practise a lot I think.. I always seem to make their noses too long.
But anyway I had quite a lot of fun drawing people in the canteen today, trying to not to be too obvious in staring at them. Then I had a bit of an accident and ended up experimenting with drawing with the coffee. Here are some possible Elisabeth Bennets:
The drawing of the girl below is my favourite and probably someone close to how I would imagine Elisabeth looks like, with wild pinned back hair and strong but pretty features. Possibly need to rub out the post-Victorian era headphones. And find a Mr Darcy.

The final images for my summer project. I made a small book with quotes illustrated from ‘The Road’, to try and show the small part of dreamy hopefulness in the novel. I wanted the illustrations to be fairly abstract and subjective. Actually preferred previous work to the final outcome as they looked more free and expressive, probably because I worried about this final piece too much. But I like the idea at least… I think…

No new work I’m afraid but I was just looking through some pre-uni stuff on my hard drive, and thought I’d put this up. It’s an album cover I was asked to make for this talented chap: http://www.myspace.com/wilbermusic, who was a finalist in the BBC’s Young Folk Awards in 2007.
This isn’t actually the final version of the cover but for some reason it’s the only copy I have scanned in… I believe I did this in the summer last year, and I used fine line pen, magic markers and a little bit of photoshop. I was pretty pleased with the outcome; one of those rare times when something you produce turns out the way you wanted it to. And it’s a bit of a different idea to my normal attempts at designing which is probably another reason why I quite like it.

The last pieces of work I produced for the summer project before the final piece. Still looking at the ‘dream’ theme, I started to look at symbolism and how this is used in the book; mainly so I could attempt work that was slightly more abstract but still related to ‘The Road’. Looking at symbolism is probably going off on a tangent a little bit too much, but it was interesting to learn about none the less, and there are paragraphs such as this one below (which is in fact the last paragraph in the novel) that don’t make initial sense in the narrative, however to me is quite symbolic of McCarthy’s intentions for writing the book, and I think this is a really provocative paragraph on which to end the novel on.
