SO it’s no longer 2011. New year and hopefully a lot more new work.. It feels good to be drawing again, soo here are some sketchbook pages of some things I’ve been working on:

First drawings and paint sketches for ‘The Bloody Chamber’ illustration competition. Tricky combining the scene, mood and character designs together into one image for each story but so far we have…

Puss-In-Boots:
The Company of Wolves (Little Red Riding Hood):

Aaaand another project completed recently, just a little poster design for Uni Xmas Party. Never made something into so many different formats as I had to make a double sided flyer, TV ad and a web ad from this poster so I’m sure it was all a useful learning curve! I always find it a little bit of a struggle making posters when there are so many design specifications with all the fiddly little logos interrupting everything…

This was a couple of months back, but these are my finished entries for the Ally Capellino bag competition – brief was to create a simple graphic design based on London 2012. These got onto the website but didn’t make the final cut; think on reflection looking at the winning entries that these are a bit too complex. Have to bear in mind for future not to get too carried away when there’s a brief to follow…
Here are 2 versions of the ‘London Scape 2012′ design:
And this is the ‘Olympics Kit’ bag design:

Sketch for new peacock painting, it’s tricky to try and think about mood and themes for such a simple subject…
Think I’m going to try and concentrate on the patterns, textures and shapes rather than any grand concept, although I would like it to have a calm, flowing and harmonious feel to it. Not totally sure on the background and colours yet, that will be tomorrow’s experimenting job!

This post is a little late but better that than never..
I said I would help my fellow illustrator friend out with a mural he had designed for our local (and my current place of employment). It was a lot of fun, especially getting to paint in front of people in a public place as normally illustration-ing tends to happen in dark bedrooms and studios! This is it from start to finish:

So am fully back home now all ready to crack on with some brand new projects!
Started this peacock painting project about a year ago and got shamefully behind on it during my 3rd uni year so I think now is the time to take it up again: http://sarahkirk.wordpress.com/2010/07/25/peacock/
Am also very excited about the new House of Illustration/Folio Society book competition, last year’s was ‘The Outsider’ by Albert Camus and I never managed to finish it completely. This year we have Angela Carter’s ‘The Bloody Chamber’ which luckily I not only own but also have already done a project on it! How useful!
My battered old copy:

This is a piece for a very quick project that will hopefully be featured in an 80s cult movies zine! Seemed like a classic one to go for would be a Withnail and I montage style scene.. Tried to make the piece seem a bit grubby and scruffy with grey scuffed pencil and yellow paint highlights but wish I had more time to make more of the comedy and expressive aspects.. Still here it is:

So I have gone and finished a new project already! Without even posting one development post..! I will eventually get back to using this blog properly but for now I have very limited internet access so will have to carry on with the post-every-few-of-weeks method.
Anyway this was a recent commission to develop a logo and related imagery for this lovely company:
http://www.wearemagpie.co.uk/Welcome.html
I have completed some different designs based on one main magpie image, including variations on a frame/mirror idea. As the company spots new play scripts to research and develop, the frame acts as the boundary for the magpie, mirroring him back at us like plays mirror real life. The space created by the frame could also be portrayed as a stage.
